Rangpur Lime - Citrus x. limonia Grafted
Despite the name, Rangpur is not a lime. Citrus x limonia is generally taken to be a mandarin and lemon cross, and it shows: the fruit is loose skinned and orange, peels easily, and is then startlingly sour, closer to a lemon in the glass than to anything green. Marmalade makers and gin drinkers know it well.
The tree is one of the tougher things in the citrus shed, which is why the type has long been used as a rootstock. It carries heavily, often to the point of resting the following year, and copes with heat and less than ideal soil better than a Tahitian lime will. Full sun, free draining ground and deep summer watering keep the fruit juicy rather than dry and pithy.
The predictable confusion happens at harvest. Visitors see orange fruit and eat one like a mandarin, once. Label the tree, and pick when the skin has coloured fully but before it starts to soften on the branch.
