Thorny Mandarin - Citrus deliciosa
Wear gloves at harvest. Citrus deliciosa, the willowleaf or Mediterranean mandarin, is armed with fine spines through the canopy and carries narrow, drooping foliage quite unlike the broad leaves of a modern easy peeler. This is the old world mandarin, grown around the Mediterranean long before any of the Australian selections existed.
Fruit is small, flattened and loose skinned, with an intense perfumed aroma that plenty of growers rate above anything else in the mandarin cabinet. It is also properly seedy. If you want a tidy seedless snack this is not your tree; if you want flavour and are happy to spit pips, few mandarins come close.
The plant is smaller and finer in habit than an Emperor, which suits a courtyard or a large pot, though the thorns argue against a spot beside a doorway or a washing line. Give it full sun, drainage and deep summer watering, feed after harvest, and prune lightly to keep the interior open and pickable.
