Advanced Trees

Advanced grade is what you buy when a garden has to look settled inside one season instead of four. Years of farm production sit behind it: potted up in stages, root pruned at each move, so what arrives has a trunk and a formed head. It suits a front garden that has to match a finished house, or a boundary where the neighbour's upstairs window is the problem. Three things should send you smaller. Down a fifty metre run, semi advanced material buys more screen for the same outlay. And if a wet root ball cannot get down the side of the house without a machine, buy smaller. A big tree is not a head start on growth. It stands still for a season while the roots go looking for the rest of the bed.

What advanced grade means on this site

This range gathers every plant our farms grow on to advanced size, roughly 45L and up. It is not an exclusive tier. Some listings run down to a 200mm, others are one size only, and plenty run past advanced into 200L. The collection tells you an advanced size exists. Check the selector before you assume there is a choice. Watch the labels: much of this stock is sold by diameter, not litres. A 400mm is not slightly bigger than a 300mm. Volume climbs with the cube of the width, putting a 300mm near 15 litres, a 400mm near 35 and a 500mm close to 70. It takes about a 430mm to reach 45L. Profile shifts it again: Garden Harvest olive lists a 400mm Squat beside a standard 400mm, and the squat holds less.

The grade repays you on slow stock

On a fast tree it gains less than you would think. Eucalyptus bridgesiana is listed as fast because it is, and a small one often overtakes the advanced plant that sulked through year one. Wattles do the same, though Acacia dealbata earns a warning before it goes near a boundary: native to the south east, weedy well outside that range including parts of SA and WA, quick to sucker from any root cut a trencher or edger makes, and short-lived. Fast and permanent are different things. Slow stock is where the grade earns its keep. Evergreen magnolia comes in at 75L with slow to moderate growth still ahead of it.

Getting it through the first summer

Cut the circling roots. Stock potted up this often has roots wrapping the container wall, and left alone they girdle the trunk three to five years on. Slice the sides in three or four places, then dig wide and no deeper than the ball sits. In the basalt clay across Melbourne's west a deep hole becomes a sump and the ball drowns over winter. Plant proud of the grade. Perth's limestone sand fails the other way, and not only on drainage: high pH locks up iron, so lime sensitive stock, magnolias and camellias above all, yellows between the veins however well you water. Olives and Turkish pine do not care, though birds spread olive seed, so keep one clear of bushland. Water still causes most losses. A container ball sits bone dry inside a bed you soaked, because mix and soil absorb at different rates. Water at the trunk, slowly, and check the ball itself. Stake low and loose, and pull them after a year. Deciduous stock goes in over winter while dormant, which holds in frost country like the Southern Highlands. Around Brisbane the window is autumn, once the wet has passed.

The ranges either side carry the same stock at a different age. Semi advanced trees suit long runs and infill between anchors, and mature 100L trees where one specimen has to read as finished on day one. Super advanced 200L stock needs machine access. To choose by species rather than size, start in feature trees.
